Telenovelas In Ghana – Who Stands Accused?

The fights on influx of telenovela in Ghana that has found their way not only on the markets but on the mainstream TV stations continue to rage. While a section stand against the idea of they being shown on TV especially the time they are aired, others don’t seem to have a problem with it and rather think it is a blessing in disguise to television in Ghana.
I cannot fathom how they started creeping in but it was solely Mexican till Brazilian, Philippines, Indian etc, joined. Truth be told, it is neither my doing nor yours but the problem of the laws governing this country which is emphatic on these cries we are talking about. Courtesy Ghanaian media mogul Ricky Anokye, I have the Ghanaian law’s stand on this:
    BROADCASTING STANDARDS 2005
    15. Drama and Film
    (a)
Film and Drama programmes must serve as important means of education, promotion of national consciousness, entertainment, as well as vehicles for promoting the social, economic and cultural objectives of the Nation.
    (b)
As far as possible, broadcasters shall devote at least
50% of their airtime to local productions.
    (c)
Television broadcasters are encouraged to show Ghanaians and African films.
    (d)
An internal mechanism of censoring local and foreign films and radio programmes should be established to safeguard Ghanaians values and interests.
    (e)
Films, radio and television programmes with adult content should not be broadcast when children are likely to be watching or listening.
    (f)
Violence and crime should not be glamorized in films but should be portrayed as punishable.
    (g)
Pornography and copy of foreign values and expressions, which are likely to impact negatively on Ghanaians, should be discouraged.
    (h)
Upgrading of the quality of local productions should be encouraged and promoted.
    (i)
The scheduling of all films and television programmes should be guided by existing classification policy.
    (j)
Discretion should be used in the portrayal of women in film and drama to avoid presenting a consistently negative and stereotyped image.”
Yes! The above written were not concocted just yesterday but very real and was promulgated as far back as 2005 so if we cry about this and people mandated refuse to act when in reality, they are not supposed to even wait till that time then it becomes a bother. The only question that is left to be asked is who fights for the Ghanaian.
I am appalled by those who say parenting is the most important thing here and but the truth is that in the times we live in now, parents have little control over what their wards do. Take into consideration times that wards are freed from school and compare to that when parents close from their various works. Some will like to be hypocritical about this but the truth is that the middle income earners to the lower income earners are more than high income earners hence the majority of children are at risk.
Amazingly, the same Ghanaians who complain run from churches just to watch these telenovelas while others even totally ignore church and other very important and lucrative ventures. The same people who happen to be bosses in certain positions in some institutions sign checks to sponsor these same series we are bitterly complaining about. However, there are very great and educative contents that will help viewers but are rather those suffering from financial aid from the same people who will rather sponsor these telenovelas.
So who really is to blame in this scenario? The one showing who in return gets back money by way of sponsorships or the viewer who has gotten him or herself gripped by these telenovela at the expense of lucrative ventures or the sponsor or the institutions mandated and backed with legal grounds to deal with matters of this nature?
The onus is on you now to do your picking but truth is, don’t rely on any human to do you right but yourself. God bless and help us in this country where the moral fabric is decaying by the day!
